Although the name “facelift” seems self-explanatory, the term is more confusing than what is naturally assumed at first blush. Often patients come to a plastic surgeon with the notion that a “facelift” means refreshing the entire face. Confusingly, this is not how plastic surgeons use this term. First of all, the facelift zone involves the lower two-thirds of the face and doesn’t deal with the eyelids and forehead. Also, the zone reaches down to the lower part of the neck. Perhaps, it would be better to call a “facelift” a “cheek-lift/jaw-lift/neck-lift”. It is of course important to settle this first or risk persistent confusion about what is actually lifted.
When you consult with Dr. Okamoto for a facelift, he will carefully examine multiple features of your mid and lower face and neck and will demonstrate to you how they contribute to your aged appearance. Among other things, a typical consultation will include the hollowing of your lower lid zone, the descent of your cheek fat, the depth of your nasolabial folds, the prominence of your jowls, and your sagging neck with its extra fat. Once you are shown how these areas have surrendered to gravity, he will explain steps that can be taken for improvement.
