Can Breast Implants Lift Sagging Breasts?

It is natural to assume that breast augmentation, which involves the placement of breast implants to enhance breast size and shape, may also produce a “lifting” effect for breasts that are showing signs of ptosis (sagging). However, it is very important to note that breast augmentation is simply not designed to improve a sagging or drooping appearance. Breast implants can very successfully add volume and fullness to the breasts for patients who desire a larger breast size, but for those who have concerns primarily related to breasts that appear to be lower on the chest than they were in the past, a breast lift is typically the more ideal solution.

Breast lift surgery is specifically designed to correct breast ptosis, which is an extremely common condition that can gradually result from weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and the effects that aging can have on the elasticity of the skin. Gravity and other environmental factors can also play a role in the development of ptosis over time. A breast lift can remove excess tissue that is weighing the breasts down and causing them to sag. Once this step of the procedure is accomplished, the breast tissue is resculpted and the remaining skin is tightened, which can quite literally lift the breasts and nipples to a higher position and create a more youthful and “perky” projection. These are goals that cannot be achieved by a breast augmentation, which is why a breast lift is often more suitable in cases where the breasts are sagging. With all of this in mind, some individuals may be considering their options for improving breast ptosis in addition to enhancing breast volume. In cases such as these, a combination breast lift with implants procedure may be an appropriate solution.
