Non-Surgical Cosmetic Enhancement Tips Part 3: BOTOX® Injections, Dysport®, and Ultherapy®

In this final installment of our blog series on non-surgical aesthetic enhancement, Dr. Eric Okamoto answers questions about three of the most popular options for facial rejuvenation available: BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Ultherapy®.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® Injectables

How do injectables like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® reduce signs of facial aging?

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are two of the most frequently performed enhancement procedures in America, and have maintained this status for quite some time. These treatments involve injections of substances known as “neuromodulators.” BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® utilize a solution composed of a diluted form of botulinum toxin, an ingredient that temporarily relaxes facial muscles in specific areas. By relaxing these muscles and preventing them from contracting (which causes wrinkles and creases), neuromodulators can give the skin a smoother, more youthful, and refreshed appearance. These procedures are known for being relatively quick, in-office treatments, allowing patients to receive a more convenient, non-surgical remedy to their aesthetic concerns and to avoid lengthy recovery times. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® can be particularly ideal for patients who would like to diminish signs of crow’s feet, creases along the forehead, and lines that manifest between the eyes. While the results of these injectables typically only last up to four months, patients can maintain the effects with occasional follow-up injections.

While BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® injections can be very effective, it is important to choose an experienced injector for the treatment to increase the potential for optimal results. The skills of the injector are vital in order to achieve outcomes that look natural and do not yield a “frozen” appearance.

Ultherapy®

Can Ultherapy® truly be utilized as an effective non-surgical alternative to facelift surgery?

The FDA-cleared Ultherapy® procedure is an innovative non-surgical treatment designed to target deep dermal layers, allowing the tissue to regenerate collagen and elastin. Also referred to as Ulthera®, the Ultherapy® technique harnesses the rejuvenating power of ultrasonic waves to create tighter skin while reducing mild to moderate signs of aging. This process can ultimately provide a “lifting” effect, giving the skin of the face and neck a firmer, more youthful appearance, which can be somewhat similar to what a surgical facelift can achieve. Bear in mind, there is no non-surgical treatment available that can provide a significantly comparable experience to facelift surgery in terms of the final outcome and longevity of results; however, Ultherapy® can achieve noticeable rejuvenation and can be a very effective alternative for patients who may not need or desire a surgical procedure to achieve their goals.
